Dexter Area Fire Department

In 1877 the Village of Dexter purchased their first hook and ladder truck, axes and pails and formed the "Hook & Ladder Company #1". More than 100 years later, in 1985, the Dexter Area Fire Department (DAFD) was created. The DAFD services the Village of Dexter, Dexter Township, Webster Township and Lima Township and all of the communities have representation on the DAFD's governing board.

The DAFD consists of 7 full-time personnel and additional paid on-call volunteers who cover a 65 square mile area within Washtenaw County. The ISO (Insurance Service Organization) rating is 5. The DAFD has one primary station and three substations throughout the area, covering all of the Village of Dexter, 90% of Webster Township, 80% of Dexter Township, and 10% of Lima Township. The main fire station located in downtown Dexter is equipped with an engine rescue pumper, tower, tanker/pumper, and 2 rescue/brush trucks. The Dexter Township substation is equipped with a brush/rescue truck and the Webster Township substation is equipped with a pumper engine.

Police Services

The Washtenaw County Sheriff's Department serves the Village's law enforcement and public safety needs. Since we do not have our own police department, we have a contract with the Washtenaw County Sheriff's Department. The Washtenaw County Sheriff's Station #3 is located in the same building as the DAFD, and it serves the Village and surrounding townships. There are nine deputies, including one school liaison, four deputies patrolling the 3 municipalities; "COPS" (community oriented police) working in conjunction with the individual municipalities on special problems, crime prevention and other local law enforcement activities; and one sergeant. The Washtenaw County Sheriff's Station #3 is equipped with one motorcycle for special events and day-to-day patrol, five marked patrol cars and one unmarked patrol car to cover the entire 75 square mile service area.
